A popular venue for the RAF at the start of WW2.
Burnt down 1942 and eventually the ground floor became the bungalow shown below (BS0084).

David Lane sent the following information "This photo is the old Ship Inn, later Bob & Enid Brighting's first hardware store. Opposite Mill Lane and between West's house & Roy Passey."
- High Street Cottage - 1910 -
To the left is the house lived in by Bert Rye, manager of The International Stores, the predecessor of Somerfields. By the 1920s the thatched cottage had been refurbished. See page 53 of "Benson - A Century of Change".
